Valentines Day is upon us....

The drugstores are once again filled with cheap hearts full of chocolate and red and pink are taking over. I love it, and not for romantic reasons so much as red and pink are my favorite colors. I do however plan on making some flirtinis and wearing something pretty with red lipstick...call me a traditionalist. As for gifts I'm looking to buy Rob this shirt, modeled by the fabulous Albert Hammond Jr. But the store doesn't have it! Off to the vintage shops to search out something like it I guess.

What are your plans?

Happy (belated) Birthday Gia!

" Life and death, energy and peace. If I stop today it was still worth it. Even the terrible mistakes that I made and would have unmade if I could. The pains that have burned me and scarred my soul, it was worth it, for having been allowed to walk where I've walked, which was to hell on earth, heaven on earth, back again, into, under, far in between, through it, and
above. " -Gia Carangi
Gia would have been 49 this year.

At Last

Here it is the President and First Lady's first dance. They are really one of the best couples around. The love and respect that they have for each other just emanates from them. Pure class, just like I expected.

Flirtini's are awesome

So, this weekend I bought a kit to make valentines with my niece, and in the kit was a book with all sorts of awesomeness. But the best was a recipe for Flirtini's. Excuse the dorky name, and give it a chance though. I'm thinking about the future here. Basically all they are is champagne, one shot pineapple juice, one shot vodka. Pour over ice, or not. According to differing recipes you serve these in a flute or martini glass. I like a old fashioned glass, but I just hate stems. Super easy, super good, super effective. Can I once more say super? Apparently these are not new, I am just behind the times. They even mention them on the episode of Sex and the City where Samantha has problems with the tranny hookers...but that's besides the point. These are great really. God, I hope I don't sound like a lush...

Bring Back Indie 103.1

Last week a major travesty of justice occurred on the airwaves. Unexpectedly and very suddenly the best radio station in L.A. went off the air. No warning, no explanation (short of "we're not playing the corporate game..), just gone. And it broke my heart, and i'm sure the hearts of many others. What are we supposed to do without Jonesy's Jukebox? Seriously, what? I was so excited for the next days broadcast too, Lemmy from Motorhead and Slim Jim Phantom of the Stray Cats. For those unaware, they have a killer band called the Head Cat where they play old 50s rock n roll. Its amazing and I couldn't wait to hear what they were going to play and talk about. It just isn't fair. Indie is supposed to be online now, but all the major djs are gone, so it's souless. I hope something is figured out, maybe they'll make it member supportd like KCRW. I would happily pay for Indie, and i'm broke but I would pay $100 to get it back.It means that much to me. Right now there is a petition going on, so if you can get as many people to sign it, it can only help our case. http://letindielive. com/. com/

It is looking to be a good year...or four...or eight

I listened to the Inauguration for our new President Obama this morning (just typing that makes me happy), and it was very powerful. It feels good to be an American today and I'm really happy that it's real and that we can only move forward at this point. I think because today was so full of history and progress in the making it is hard to put it into words. I know someday my niece will ask me what it was like to be alive and witness to such a moment in history and when she does I will be able to tell her more eloquently then I am able to right now, but it is still fresh and I am still processing all of the happy feelings and relief that I have been unable to feel about this country for the past eight years. It will take time to really be able to make it make sense. I just know that I am happy, and it feels too much like a dream.Regarding the inauguration, I especially liked Rev. Lowery's benediction. And though I am not a religious person at all, it was moving. So here it is in full:

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, thou who has brought us thus far along the way, thou who has by thy might led us into the light, keep us forever in the path, we pray, lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee, lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee. Shadowed beneath thy hand may we forever stand -- true to thee, O God, and true to our native land.
We truly give thanks for the glorious experience we've shared this day. We pray now, O Lord, for your blessing upon thy servant, Barack Obama, the 44Th president of these United States, his family and his administration. He has come to this high office at a low moment in the national and, indeed, the global fiscal climate. But because we know you got the whole world in your hand, we pray for not only our nation, but for the community of nations. Our faith does not shrink, though pressed by the flood of mortal ills.
For we know that, Lord, you're able and you're willing to work through faithful leadership to restore stability, mend our brokenness, heal our wounds and deliver us from the exploitation of the poor or the least of these and from favoritism toward the rich, the elite of these.
We thank you for the empowering of thy servant, our 44Th president, to inspire our nation to believe that, yes, we can work together to achieve a more perfect union. And while we have sown the seeds of greed -- the wind of greed and corruption, and even as we reap the whirlwind of social and economic disruption, we seek forgiveness and we come in a spirit of unity and solidarity to commit our support to our president by our willingness to make sacrifices, to respect your creation, to turn to each other and not on each other.
And now, Lord, in the complex arena of human relations, help us to make choices on the side of love, not hate; on the side of inclusion, not exclusion; tolerance, not intolerance.
And as we leave this mountaintop, help us to hold on to the spirit of fellowship and the oneness of our family. Let us take that power back to our homes, our workplaces, our churches, our temples, our mosques, or wherever we seek your will.
Bless President Barack, First Lady Michelle. Look over our little, angelic Sasha and Malia.
We go now to walk together, children, pledging that we won't get weary in the difficult days ahead. We know you will not leave us alone, with your hands of power and your heart of love.
Help us then, now, Lord, to work for that day when nation shall not lift up sword against nation, when tanks will be beaten into tractors, when every man and every woman shall sit under his or her own vine and fig tree, and none shall be afraid; when justice will roll down like waters and righteousness as a mighty stream.
Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around -- (laughter) -- when yellow will be mellow -- (laughter) -- when the red man can get ahead, man -- (laughter) -- and when white will embrace what is right.
Let all those who do justice and love mercy say amen.
AUDIENCE: Amen!
REV. LOWERY: Say amen --
AUDIENCE: Amen!
REV. LOWERY: -- and amen.
AUDIENCE: Amen! (Cheers, applause.)

It's been much too long my dear.

Life has been moving at warp speed as of late and I've been struggling to fight the inertia I've been craving and hop on to something constructive...like say this blog. What a wonderful day today has been. The start of a new era, time for change. It's quite symbolic for me, as in many ways my everyday life has been shifting. So, I strive to keep my chin up, my heart full, and my mind optimistic. It will become what it is meant to be.

Little Joy

Little Joy is really giving me some musical happiness right now. KCRW is promoting it at every commercial break and I liked the teasers, not to mention that everyone keeps telling me how great they are-and they really are. It's a pretty perfect combination. It's a pretty decent year for music already, I have to say it was a pleasure shopping Amoeba Records on Sunday. There is something very magical about a band like the Strokes and how they've all managed to do really great solo stuff. In fact Albert Hammond Jr.'s two albums are among my favorite, I'm hooked on Nickel Eye , and now Little Joy. Not to mention Albert's producing the Postelles Debut album, which I'm expecting to be great. Their EP is amazing, enough so that I actually broke down and used iTunes to get it. And I hate iTunes....so there you have it.

So annoying

So I tried to set up a myspace to coincide with this blog, and boy it was annoying. I've had a personal myspace for so long that I can't imagine going through it all again. I might just have to scrap the whole thing.....

You. Better. Work!

I love the World of Wonder, walking towards Cherokee on Hollywood I nearly had a coronary....RuPaul is having an art show! A Drag Art Show!!!! Is four exclamation points even enough? By the way I love their window displays and cannot wait to see what they do with this one-anyone else LOVE the Dolly Parton one?
I really want this for my apartment.
I actually had this ad taped to my wall for years.

Sunday at Griffith Park

Today we went to Griffith Park and it was beautiful. I highly suggest it. Best view of the city hands down. I cannot tell you how many times me and my sister Karla have tried to go here, only to be turned away because it was closed. So, I'm grateful that I finally got in. Here's the first half of this post. I'll definitely be posting more pictures of the trip tomorrow.

A Rare Jean Harlow Picture

Of course I love the clothes in this one, but mostly it just reminds me that I need to get my passport.... I wonder what a film star like Jean Harlow did in Tijuana in those days. Do you think she bought any Chiclets???How about a ceramic donkey??

Gorgeous Garbo

I also had to add this one, for anyone who has never seen it. A perfect face. I want to look like that!

Miss Grable

A lot a bit of pretty for you:
I came upon this photo and was just struck like lightning. What a gorgeous face Miss Betty had, and the hair is to dye for as well. It's almost so beautiful that it's contemporary, I'd rock that entire look in heartbeat...now I just need the adorable ruffled blouse. Funny-she reminds me a bit of Kate Winslet.

Grand Old Party

I'm completely obsessed with this band. They are one of those bands I heard about a ton last year and never listened too until now. They are a San Diego band, so had I listened to the hype I probably would have had a better chance to see them since I was living there last year... I guess I just didn't want to believe the hype...stupid stupid me. They are great. So, don't be a dummy like me. Check 'em out.

Happy New Year!

I hope you got a cool hat/crown, a loud horn, and a kiss. In that order. Because nothing is cooler that getting to wear a paper crown when you are 25.

Flutterfetti is Awesome

If you aren't at a major party on New Years, but still want the confetti here's what you do. Get some Flutterfetti and go crazy in the streets.
That way you get the fun of having confetti everywhere and you don't have to clean it up.

See what I mean? What a mess! The best part is that now it's all over my block, it made it all the way to the laundry room in my building. And it's my little secret....
